Meet Class XI
OSU’s College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences created the Ohio Leadership, Education and Development (LEAD) Program in 1985 for the purpose of preparing emerging, adult leaders to assume positions of responsibility within their communities and organizations. The program is administered under the guidance of OSU Extension within the College. The program’s participants are not OSU students, they are individuals employed within their communities who have at least five years of work and/or leadership experience. Individuals are nominated and undergo interviews for admittance into the program. Participants are selected according to the criteria of exhibiting leadership skills within their communities. They are a diverse career group, comprised of those involved in food, agriculture and environmental activities. Participant understanding of the diversity of people, cultures, industry and networks is extremely important to Ohio State University Extension, and participants of the Ohio LEAD program are significant contributors to Ohio’s communities. Since the Program’s beginning, over 270 individuals have completed the program and have become leading government officials; company CEO’s, board members and community representatives. They credit the Ohio LEAD Program with providing the impetus for their success and their involvement within their communities. Ohio LEAD participants are provided instruction in leadership and the current issues facing America and the consuming public – along with diversity and the particular challenges related to these issues. Emphasis is placed on state, national, and international events. Up to twelve in-depth study institutes are held within Ohio, nationally and internationally. Participants in the ten previous classes have studied in such areas as: Washington D.C., Hawaii, South Africa, Europe, Brazil, and China. Each in-state institute lasts two to three days, while out-of-state institutes usually last five to six days; however, the international travel seminar may require up to 10 working days.
